What happens during a pet dental procedure?

Step 1: Pre-Procedure Physical Examination and Blood Work

Before the dental procedure, the veterinarian will perform a full physical exam and blood tests to ensure the pet is safe to undergo anesthesia.

Step 2: IV Catheter Placement

An intravenous (IV) catheter will be placed for added safety before the procedure begins.

Step 3: Sedation and Anesthesia Administration

The pet will be sedated and then put under anesthesia for the duration of the procedure.

Step 4: Continuous Monitoring and IV Fluid Support

Throughout the procedure, the pet will be closely monitored and given IV fluids to help maintain blood pressure and organ health.

Step 5: Oral Examination

The veterinarian will conduct a thorough oral exam to evaluate the condition of the teeth and gums.

Step 6: Ultrasonic Scaling

The teeth will be cleaned with an ultrasonic scaler, a high-speed vibrating tool that removes large pieces of plaque and tartar.

Step 7: Hand Scaling

A hand scaler is used to clean under the gums and on all sides of each tooth.

Step 8: Gum Health Assessment

Dental probes are used to check the depth of pockets between the teeth and gums. Deep pockets can indicate periodontal disease.

Step 9: Dental X-Rays

Dental X-rays may be recommended to evaluate the bone structure beneath the gums.

Step 10: Polishing and Fluoride Treatment

After all plaque and tartar are removed, the teeth are polished and a fluoride treatment may be applied.

Step 11: Anesthesia Recovery

The pet will then be carefully watched as they recover from anesthesia.
