Bowie started vomiting throughout Saturday night and clearly wasn’t himself Sunday morning. We have a regular veterinarian we’ve used for years, but Bowie needed urgent care, so I pulled into CityVet a few minutes before they opened at 8:30 Sunday morning.
From the moment they unlocked the doors and let us inside, I knew we were in good hands.
The vet techs immediately got Bowie into a room and began preparing everything so they could start figuring out what was wrong as soon as Dr. Gillette arrived. Meanwhile, I was scared and crying through intake. They offered me water, went slowly, answered my questions, and never made me feel rushed. They even left our exam room door open while we waited, frequently walking by and checking on us. It was such a small thing, but it made me feel incredibly safe and cared for.
Dr. Gillette was wonderful. She explained why each test was necessary, what she was looking for, the expected timeline, and the cost. When Bowie’s labs came back, she explained them in normal, understandable language, including why certain abnormal numbers weren’t necessarily cause for alarm and which results actually mattered. Her attention to detail continued throughout Bowie’s treatment. She paid attention to his symptoms and recovery and adjusted his care accordingly.
What really captured the heart of this team, though, was how they treated my five-year-old daughter.
She was devastated that her Bowie was sick. Dr. Gillette took time out of her day to come back out and patiently explain to her how she was going to take care of Bowie. When we picked him up, the vet techs gave my daughter his food and medicine and explained how she could help take care of her dog. Then they went through everything again with the adults to make sure we had it covered. They didn’t have to include her that way, but it meant so much to both of us.
When we returned Monday, techs who weren’t even assigned to Bowie stopped by just to see him and love on him. The tech who had first let us inside Sunday morning came into our room simply because she wanted to see how he was doing. Bowie walked over, pushed his big head against her, and she sat there loving on him. While she was doing that, she noticed he felt warm and immediately checked his temperature.
That moment sums up our experience perfectly: genuine kindness paired with incredible attentiveness.
Over the next several days, they remembered us, greeted us by name, patiently answered my follow-up calls, and noticed the smallest signs that Bowie was feeling better. They even commented that his ears were “floppier and happier” because he looked more comfortable.
Nothing about our experience felt impersonal or overly clinical. It felt like being surrounded by genuinely good people who happen to also be exceptionally good at caring for animals. They treated Bowie like Bowie, not just another case of pancreatitis.
Most importantly, Bowie is doing GREAT and is back to his usual self.
Dr. Gillette and the CityVet team took excellent medical care of my dog, but they also took care of a scared dog mom and a five-year-old little girl who needed to know that the people caring for her Bowie cared about him too. They very clearly did.
We are incredibly thankful for Dr. Gillette and every member of the CityVet Kingwood team who cared for our boy.
My dog broke her leg on August 9th, and honestly, this has been a long, stressful nightmare that I’m still dealing with. I’ve been doing everything I can to take care of her, and it has been really hard.
This weekend I had to take her to an emergency vet. Before going, I called several different places because I was worried about the cost. This clinic ended up having the best pricing out of everywhere I called, which was already a huge relief.
But the people there are what really stood out to me.
The receptionist was the sweetest, and the vet tech was sincerely AMAZING. You could tell right away that he genuinely loves animals and cares about the people attached to them. He was so kind and patient with me and my girl, and he even asked me if I needed help getting her out to my car.
Of course, being the independent woman I am, I said no. But honestly, the fact that he even asked meant something to me. It was such a small gesture, but when you’re stressed, worried, and exhausted from everything you’ve been dealing with, those little things matter.
I don’t want to say anything bad about my regular vet because they have been taking care of my dog throughout this whole situation, and I respect that. But the staff here pointed out some things to me that I honestly didn’t know and that I now need to bring up with my regular vet. They were very open with me, honest about what they were seeing, and answered my questions without making me feel stupid for asking.
The veterinarian herself was so incredibly sweet and understanding. She listened to everything I had been going through and never made me feel rushed or dismissed. She was honest with me and gave me her genuine opinion, and I really appreciated that.
You can tell when someone is just there to do a job, and you can also tell when someone truly cares. Everyone I dealt with here genuinely cared. Not only about my dog, but about me too.
After everything I’ve been dealing with since the start of August
that meant more to me than they probably realize.
I’m so thankful I found this place when I needed somewhere to take my girl. I left feeling like I had been listened to, understood, and actually cared for.
Definitely a 10/10 from me. I would absolutely recommend them. Thank you for taking care of my girl and for being so kind to her worried mama.
I brought my dog here 5 minutes before they closed for an emergency and they were so king enough to stay and treat him way past their shift hours. They went above and beyond for my dog when I needed it most. We are forever grateful. Thank you City Vet.

Can dogs eat corn on the cob or hot dogs at your Labor Day BBQ?
Quick answer: no! Bones splinter, corn cobs cause blockages, and chocolate/xylitol are toxic. Keep pet-friendly treats on hand instead.
A few other things to keep in mind: alcohol and soda are off-limits, fresh water + shade beat the heat, supervise pool time (not every dog`s a strong swimmer), set up a quiet space for fireworks-sensitive pets, and clear the yard of citronella candles, bug spray, and skewers.
A little prep = a fun, stress-free weekend for everyone!

Did you know?!
They`re far more driven by aroma than flavor, which is why warming up food often tempts a picky or recovering patient to eat.
